Tonight, Apple will hold an It’s Glowtime event, during which the iPhone 16, new Apple Watch smart watches, AirPods headphones, as well as other hardware innovations from the company will be officially presented. Along with this, iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and new features based on artificial intelligence Apple Intelligence will be announced. The event will take place at Apple headquarters in Cupertino at 13:00 local time (20:00 Moscow time). You can follow the presentation online on the YouTube channel and the company website.
The centerpiece of the presentation will be the new iPhone 16 – the company’s most powerful smartphones with the best cameras, at least this is true for the Pro models. Smartphones will receive updated hardware solutions, and their software component includes more new Apple Intelligence AI functions, such as an improved Siri voice assistant, an image generation and editing tool, the ability to record and transcribe calls, etc.
The very word “glowtime” in the title of Apple’s event is likely a reference to the glow effect that appears at the edges of the iPhone screen when Siri is activated in the latest iOS 18 developer betas. According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, “glowtime” is also the internal name for macOS Sequoia, which will likely be available to compatible device owners alongside iOS 18 later this fall.
Apple Intelligence’s AI capabilities require a powerful microprocessor to run. For the past few years, Apple has equipped the new base iPhone with the previous-generation flagship processor, while more advanced models received a new chip. The Apple A17 Pro processor in the iPhone 15 Pro is currently the only A-series chip that supports Apple Intelligence. According to rumors, this year all versions of the iPhone 16 will be equipped with the new A18 microprocessor.
It is expected that the iPhone 16 will use a rear design that is different from what we have been used to seeing in recent years. This applies to the main camera unit. According to the source, the main camera sensors in the iPhone 16 are located vertically relative to each other, as in the iPhone 12 and iPhone X, and not diagonally, as in all smartphone models starting with the iPhone 13. According to authoritative analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (Ming -Chi Kuo), iPhone 16 will also have better battery life compared to last year’s models.
According to rumors, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max models will have identical cameras. Both devices may get a 5x zoom telephoto lens, which is currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The ultra-wide-angle module is also expected to be improved with a larger 48-megapixel sensor. According to rumors, the Pro and Pro Max models will be equipped with larger screens than their current generation counterparts. Earlier this year, Mark Gurman wrote that the iPhone 16 Pro will have a 6.3-inch screen, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will have a 6.9-inch screen. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models are equipped with displays with a diagonal of 6.1 and 6.7 inches, respectively.
The developers will also equip the iPhone 16 with new pressure-sensitive buttons on the side of the case. Due to this, a function will be implemented that allows the camera to focus when you press the button lightly, and take a picture when you press it harder. This feature will likely only be available on Pro models. In general, you shouldn’t expect any major changes in the design of new Apple smartphones.
Also as part of the upcoming event, the announcement of new smart watches Apple Watch Series 10 (possibly X), which will become thinner and more sophisticated than the Series 9 models, is expected. Rumor has it that one of the new products will be a Watch Ultra watch with a 49 mm screen and a new processor. We can expect an updated version of the standard Watch Ultra model, as well as a more affordable Watch SE with a plastic case.
In addition to this, Apple is announcing new AirPods wireless headphones, in the form of entry-level and mid-level models. It is possible that updated AirPods Max will appear with a USB Type-C interface and in new colors. Most likely, the new AirPods will replace the second and third generation versions. The mid-range model is expected to feature an AirPods Pro-style design, noise-canceling support, and a case with a built-in speaker to support Find My functionality. Both new products will come with cases equipped with a USB Type-C connector for charging.
It is possible that at today’s event Apple will announce a new Mac Mini, the size of which is comparable to the Apple TV set-top box. The Mac Mini is expected to begin shipping this month, with the Pro version expected to go on sale in October. It is unknown whether Apple will make any announcements regarding the Vision Pro mixed reality headset today.
