Apple is preparing an updated Studio Display monitor with a modern Mini-LED matrix

Apple is planning a new 27-inch display with Mini LED backlighting. The display will be the successor to the Studio Display released in 2022 and will remain the same size, but will offer significant improvements in contrast, black depth, and possibly overall brightness, The Verge reports.

The original Studio Display, even at the time of its release, was inferior to modern TVs and many displays due to its use of traditional LED technology, which constantly illuminates the entire panel. Mini-LED, on the other hand, provides richer, more contrasty images because it has multiple on-screen dimming zones that automatically turn on and off depending on the content being displayed.

The move to Mini-LED will improve the display’s backlight uniformity and make blacks deeper when watching video. It should be noted that the Studio Display already offers excellent color accuracy and a very sharp 5K resolution, but the monitor is subject to minor backlight bleeding and other irregularities typical of conventional LED panels.

Apple could also improve the built-in camera in the new Studio Display, as the camera quality in the original product was poor and even forced Apple to issue a firmware update to improve clarity. As for the built-in speakers, they are “pretty decent,” notes The Verge’s user, and there’s no need to use standalone speakers.

Interestingly, the more expensive Pro Display XDR already uses Mini-LED technology, but Apple hasn’t updated it since 2020. Since then, the company has improved the backlight technology, including on the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro, which could benefit the new Studio Display.
