Apple Intelligence began to hallucinate when creating news excerpts – the feature has been disabled

Apple has suspended Apple Intelligence, a feature that uses a neural network-based algorithm to generate short news excerpts. This happened after the iPhone maker faced a wave of criticism from users who drew attention to the fact that the AI algorithm often generates inaccurate or completely untrue excerpts.

Against this background, Apple had to completely disable the news reporting feature that was available in the latest preview versions of iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3 and macOS Sequoia 15.3. It is expected that this tool will again be available to users after improvements and verification of the correctness of the generated content.

In addition, Apple will make AI-generated news reports more visible. Moving forward, news reports will be displayed in italics to help users distinguish them from other content and notifications. If necessary, users will be able to disable the function of generating news reports for each individual application directly on the lock screen. Apple will also begin notifying users when the AI news reporting feature is activated that the tool is in beta testing and may experience errors.

These changes did not come as a surprise, since the function of generating news reports was actively criticized not only by ordinary users of Apple devices, but also by journalists, including representatives of the BBC and the National Union of Journalists. The public beta of iOS 18.3 is expected to arrive next week. It is not yet known when the stable version of iOS 18.3 will be released.
