Android smartphones will soon get one of the new iPhone features – AI notification summaries

Android is likely to soon get a new feature: preparing notification summaries using artificial intelligence, Android Authority reports. Previously, a similar feature appeared in the Apple Intelligence package, but due to a large number of errors, it was decided to abandon it.

Apple launched the AI-based summaries feature in notifications with the release of iOS 18.3, but the system made an unacceptably large number of factual errors when processing materials, including incorrectly interpreting news about important global events, and the company had to suspend the function, sending it back for revision. Google also had a bad relationship with AI summaries: the company had previously added them to the search engine, and it began to act up, even recommending gluing cheese to pizza.

Code has been found in Android 16 Beta 3 indicating that a feature is in the works that uses AI to “automatically create summaries of your in-app conversations” — it can be toggled on and off via the “Use notification summaries” option in Settings. There’s a key difference between the iOS and Android implementations of this feature: Google intends to use it only in messaging apps — Instagram✴, WhatsApp, and Telegram. That means the problem of incorrect interpretation of world news won’t have to be addressed — at least at the initial stage.

There have been no official announcements from Google about the rollout of the new feature, and it may not make it to the first stable version of Android 16. But it is possible that it will debut in one of the subsequent functional updates of the platform or even in Android 17.
