Official support for Windows 7 and Windows 8 by the Steam gaming platform was discontinued on January 1, 2024, but the Steam client did not immediately stop working on these operating systems. It still worked, but users of older OSes who encountered problems with the client noted that they no longer received support from Valve.

According to VideoCardz, the latest version of the Steam client is not installed on systems running Windows 7 and Windows 8. Those users who are still using these operating systems will not receive automatic updates to the Steam client.

«This version of the Steam client will not work with Windows 7 or Windows 8. Users of these operating systems will not receive automatic updates for the new Steam client. Please see the FAQ section for additional details,” reads the description of the new version of the gaming platform client.

Microsoft officially ended support for the Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems in January 2023. Systems based on these operating systems no longer receive technical and security updates. In addition, these operating systems do not receive support for the latest DirectX libraries and have limited compatibility with new drivers. There really is no point in users and, in particular, gamers continuing to use these operating systems and refusing to at least upgrade to Windows 10. However, even in this case, this may not be a very reliable solution. Microsoft previously announced that support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025, which is less than a year from now.
