AMD secretly showed FSR 4 working on Radeon RX 9070 video cards

At the CES 2025 exhibition site, the authors of the YouTube channel Hardware Unboxed discovered demo systems showing the capabilities of the updated AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) scaling technology.

During the official presentation at CES 2025, AMD did not talk much about the FSR 4 artificial intelligence image scaling technology, only confirming in one slide that it uses machine learning. As it turned out, she also demonstrated the operation of this technology on computers with Radeon RX 9000 series video cards – presumably the RX 9070 model. There were no counters reflecting the number of frames per second at the demonstration, which means there was no way to quantify the progress of FSR 4, but The image quality has increased significantly.

The authors of Hardware Unboxed compared the results of FSR 3.1 and FSR 4 in Performance Mode at 2x scaling, for example from 1080p to 4K. The image quality of moving objects has been significantly improved, color rendering and visualization of transparent elements have been improved – these tasks were not easy for previous versions of FSR. AMD’s technology has not yet reached DLSS, but the achievements of FSR 4 were noticeable.

When rendering confetti, streaking disappeared, crowd faces and fur became more detailed and natural, flickering effects were reduced, and even the texture of the carpet looked better. The YouTube channel’s verdict was that they would prefer to play with FSR 4 enabled, although AMD has yet to share information about performance metrics or measures to reduce latency. It is noted that the demonstration was titled AMD Graphics Research AI-based Upscaling, and not FSR 4.
