AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9000 desktop chips will offer from 16 to 96 Zen 5 cores with a consumption of 350 W

New details have appeared on the Internet about the upcoming line of AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9000 processors, codenamed Shimada Peak. The information was discovered in shipping data posted by insider @Olrak29_ on the X platform. The processors are designed for high-performance desktop systems (HEDT) and will be based on the Zen 5 architecture.

The flagship model of the line, which will presumably be called Threadripper 9980X, will have 96 cores and a TDP of 350 W. But it’s also notable that the database also mentions a 16-core model, which also has a 350W TDP, which seems overkill for a processor with that many cores. However, this is consistent with AMD practice. Let’s remember that the entire Threadripper 7000 series also had the same TDP of 350 W, regardless of the number of cores.

While the overall Ryzen 9000 lineup (9900X, 9700X, and 9600X models) has seen a drop in TDP compared to the previous generation, the Threadripper 9000 series doesn’t seem to be following that trend. This is due to the fact that in the HEDT processor segment, maximum performance remains the key priority, not energy efficiency.

As for the 16-core model, experts suggest that it will most likely be included in the PRO line, and not in the main Threadripper 9000 series. The last time 16-core processors appeared in the basic Threadripper line was back in 2018 (Threadripper 2000 series) , and PRO of previous generations (7000, 5000 and 3000) included 16-core models, which confirms the likelihood of a similar solution appearing within Shimada Peak.

The exact clock speeds of the Threadripper 9000 chips are still unknown. However, given that the 5th generation EPYC server processors on Zen 5 show a noticeable increase in this regard compared to their predecessors, we can expect a similar improvement in the new HEDT line. For comparison, the previous Threadripper 7000 series reached frequencies of up to 5.3 GHz, and the Ryzen 9 9950X reached 5.7 GHz. However, according to experts, a significant increase should not be expected.

The series also likely won’t feature models with more than 96 cores, as the server-focused Zen 5c architecture isn’t likely to make it into the Threadripper 9000 lineup like it did with the Threadripper 7000 generation.
