AMD Quietly Unveils Ryzen 8000HX Dragon Range Refresh Processors for Gaming Laptops

AMD has quietly announced its Ryzen 8000HX series of mobile processors, aimed at gamers and users working with resource-intensive tasks. The new chips, codenamed Dragon Range Refresh, are an update to last year’s Ryzen 7000HX series and continue the tradition of high performance in the gaming laptop segment.

The series includes four processor models, each of which offers up to 16 cores and 32 threads. The maximum clock speed reaches 5.4 GHz, and the cache size is 80 MB. All models are equipped with basic integrated Radeon 610M graphics, which are expected to be used in tandem with a discrete video card.

It is worth mentioning that before the official announcement, Dragon Range Refresh chips had already been repeatedly mentioned in leaks from AMD partners. In particular, the Ryzen 9 8940HX processor was accidentally revealed in the description of the Asus ROG Strix G16 2025 laptop, confirming the main characteristics

The architecture of the new processors remains the same – AMD Zen 4, manufactured using a 5-nm process technology. Like their predecessors, the chips use chiplet technology, which allows achieving high performance without a significant increase in power consumption. The Ryzen 8000HX series is expected to remain competitive with Intel solutions.

However, users will not get any significant improvements compared to the Ryzen 7000HX. The main difference is the slightly higher Boost frequency of the Ryzen 9 8940HX, which has increased by only 100 MHz compared to the previous 7940HX model.

It is also interesting that AMD has reduced the number of processors in the Ryzen 8000HX line. While the Ryzen 7000HX series offered seven models, the updated line has only four. It is unclear whether a version with 3D V-Cache technology similar to the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D will appear in the future, but at this stage such a model has not been announced.

The announcement took place without a large-scale advertising campaign, and AMD limited itself to a press release and an update of pages on its website. Unlike the hyped-up Raptor Lake update from Intel, Dragon Range Refresh is positioned as a planned and cost-effective update of the line, and not as a breakthrough solution.
