AMD introduced the best gaming processor in the world – Ryzen 7 9800X3D with new 3D V-Cache and overclocking for $479

AMD Senior Vice President and General Manager of Compute and Graphics Solutions Group Jack Huynh has officially unveiled the Ryzen 7 9800X3D gaming processor. The eight-core chip is built on Zen 5 architecture and provides a maximum clock speed of 500 MHz higher than its predecessor, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. AMD immodestly calls the new product the best processor for games in the world.

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the first model in the new Ryzen 9000X3D series of processors. The new product uses an additional 64 MB second-generation 3D V-Cache cache memory. The new memory differs from the first generation in that it is located under the CCD (Core Complex Die) crystal with computing cores, and not on top of this block, as was the case with X3D processors of previous generations.

The new layout ensured better heat removal from the cores, which had a positive effect on the clock speeds of the chip, and also opened the way for overclocking. Jack Huynh has confirmed that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is the first X3D series processor to officially support overclocking. However, the top manager did not go into details of this issue.

According to AMD, the gaming performance of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is 8% higher than its predecessor. The conclusions were drawn from tests of the new chip on a system with a Gigabyte X670 Aorus Master motherboard, 32 GB of DDR5-6000 RAM (2 × 16 GB) and a GeForce RTX 4090 video card. The performance increase in favor of the new chip varies from 1% (Cyberpunk 2077) up to 26% Hogwarts Legacy, as shown in the graph below.

Ryzen 7 9800X3D vs Ryzen 7 7800X3D

When compared to the latest flagship 24-core Intel Core Ultra 9 285K processor, the new Ryzen 7 9800X3D is on average 20% faster in games. The data is based on more than 40 gaming tests, but not all of them made it into AMD’s chart. In the same Cyberpunk 2077, AMD claims a 59 percent advantage of its chip over its competitor.

AMD’s website says the Ryzen 7 9800X3D offers eight Zen 5 cores with support for 16 virtual threads. The base processor frequency is 4.7 GHz, the maximum is 5.2 GHz. The chip has 104 MB of cache memory (8 MB L2, 32 MB L3 + 64 MB 3D V-Cache). The nominal power consumption of the processor is 120 W. It is compatible with motherboards based on AMD A620, X670E, X670, B650E, B650, X870E, X870, B840 and B850 chipsets.

The new product will go on sale starting November 7. The recommended price for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is $479. Thus, it is $30 more expensive than its predecessor at the start of sales.
