The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE was the first Radeon RX 7000 series graphics card to be discontinued. The Dutch portal Tweakers reported this with reference to sources among AMD partners.
The Radeon RX 7900 GRE video card has become difficult to find on sale. Retail representatives confirmed to the publication that the accelerator will not return to the market. The card will be sold until its stocks in warehouses are completely depleted. AMD will continue software support for the accelerator.
«The AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE graphics card has been announced as discontinued, according to confirmations from several AMD partners. […] One of the video card manufacturers AMD has confirmed the status of the discontinued RX 7900 GRE model. […] AMD has not yet commented on why the RX 7900 GRE is being discontinued. Tweakers has repeatedly reached out for comment, but has not received a response at the time of publication,” the publication reports.
The abbreviation GRE in the name Radeon RX 7900 means Golden Rabbit Edition. The card was originally released for the Chinese market in 2023. However, in January 2024, it began to be sold worldwide. The accelerator is based on a Navi 31 graphics processor with 5120 shader units and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory with a 256-bit bus.
The Radeon RX 7900 GRE’s job was to fill the gap between the Radeon RX 7900 XT and RX 7800 XT, and it did an excellent job. Initially, the card did not support additional overclocking. However, later AMD allowed it to be overclocked and the accelerator became more popular in gaming builds.
AMD is expected to introduce a new generation of Radeon graphics cards based on the RDNA 4 architecture in January. The new cards will offer higher performance at a very competitive price. It is possible that AMD decided to discontinue production of the Radeon RX 7900 GRE for the reason that it had prepared a replacement for it that would provide a similar level of performance.
