Along with Apple Intelligence, overheating came to older iPhones

Last week, Apple began rolling out the iOS 18.2 update to iPhones—it marks the company’s foray into artificial intelligence, as it comes with the Apple Intelligence suite. But some iPhone owners began to report their devices overheating when working with some of the package’s functions.

Several days have passed since the release of iOS 18.2, and iPhone owners began to share their impressions of the update – in some cases, the situation was not entirely happy. When launching a number of generative AI functions, overheating of devices and a reduction in their battery life began to be observed. As an example, Reddit users cited Image Playground, a function that transforms images from the gallery in accordance with the selected style. She can rework a person’s portrait and make it in the form of a three-dimensional model or drawing; You can also add an object to the frame. But when using the Image Playground, the devices reportedly began to heat up quickly.

Some problems appear when running the Genmoji feature – the emoji generator causes performance issues and slowdowns in the user interface. It is worth noting, however, that only owners of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max report this effect, while the function works fine on the iPhone 16. But overheating of the device when launching the Photos application is already observed on the iPhone 16; It is also reported that with the release of the iOS 18.2 update, the battery life of devices began to decrease.

There have been no official comments from Apple representatives yet, but the cause of the problems seems obvious. Similar functions on Android devices are often launched from the cloud, and Apple, while maintaining its commitment to privacy, has decided to move them locally to its devices, which can cause additional heating and reduce the battery life of gadgets. Perhaps the time has come for Apple to think about installing cooling systems on the iPhone – they are no longer uncommon in the Android camp.
