Microsoft has begun distributing an update for the basic text editor Notepad in Windows 11, which will bring support for the Rewrite text editing function, built on the basis of artificial intelligence. The previously mentioned tool was available to participants of the Windows Insider preview program in the United States.

Official Microsoft documentation indicates that the Rewrite feature is still only available to Windows Insiders running Windows 11 betas in the Canary and Dev channels. However, over the weekend, the company released a fresh version of Notepad, 11.2412.16.0, which is available to everyone. There was no official announcement about the launch of the Rewrite feature in Notepad.
It was previously reported that the Rewrite function is based on one of the versions of the large GPT language model, which is used by the AI bot ChatGPT by OpenAI. However, the algorithm was probably adapted for a simple text editor, since it lacks the capabilities of the AI assistant Copilot, which are available in Word. For example, Copilot in Word can turn paragraphs into tables, summarize content, structure documents, etc. At the same time, the capabilities of Rewrite in Notepad are limited to rewriting sentences with the ability to change their tone and length.
According to the source, users outside the US, UK, and Canada can interact with the Rewrite AI feature in Notepad without a Microsoft 365 subscription. However, the number of requests to the algorithm will be severely limited by the credits, which, once spent, will prevent them from using Rewrite for a month.
Those who have both Microsoft 365 and Copilot Pro subscriptions will be able to get the maximum number of credits. However, other non-AI-related features of Notepad can still be used absolutely free of charge.
