Adobe Unveils Many AI Features for Photoshop and Other Apps

Adobe kicked off its annual Adobe Max conference by announcing new AI-powered features for its Creative Cloud apps. We are talking about various AI tools, such as the background element removal function for Photoshop and the more powerful Firefly generative neural network. Illustrator, InDesign and Premiere Pro also get new features to speed up traditionally time-consuming tasks.

Photoshop’s Remove Tool has a new Distraction Removal feature. The Remove Tool already works similar to Google’s Magic Eraser feature on Android smartphones, allowing users to quickly remove unwanted objects from images by dragging a brush over them. The new Distraction Removal feature, which Adobe first announced last year, makes the Remove Tool even more similar to Magic Eraser. This tool is capable of automatically identifying unnecessary objects in a photo, such as people accidentally caught in the frame, and removing them with one click.

According to Adobe, Distraction Removal is already available in desktop and web versions of Photoshop, with “more features coming later.” Users of the graphic editor will be able to choose whether to use the Firefly generative neural network in the Remove Tool. In addition to this, an option will appear, when activated, the application will itself determine the need to use a generative algorithm “depending on the image and scene” to achieve the best result.

Photoshop’s Generative Expand, Generative Fill, Generate Similar, and Generate Background tools are now generally available and have been updated to integrate the Firefly 3 algorithm, which went into beta in April. According to Adobe, this update helps improve the variety and photorealistic quality of generated elements, as well as improve understanding of complex user queries. Photoshop for the web now has an AI feature that makes editing easier by automatically highlighting all the objects in an image.

Illustrator now has an AI feature called Object on Path that lets users quickly attach, position, and move objects along any shape path. This will give designers more flexibility when aligning specific areas in images. The Mockup tool for creating 3D models has been made generally available, and the Image Trace feature, which converts raster images (JPEG, PNG, PSD, etc.) into scalable vector images, has been updated. According to Adobe, the feature now produces “sharper vector images with clean lines that more closely match the original image.”

The Generative Expand tool, first introduced in Photoshop, is now also available in InDesign. It allows you to easily resize your original images to fit the user’s layout. Premiere Pro has a new feature based on the Firefly Video Model neural network for video generation. At this stage, the algorithm is in beta testing, but next year it will likely become the basis for new AI features in Adobe Creative Cloud applications.
