Adobe has released a new, significantly more functional mobile version of the graphics editor Photoshop. The iOS version is already available, and the Android app will appear later this year. The new mobile Photoshop, unlike the previous simplified version, includes most of the popular editing tools and supports generative AI.

A stripped-down version of Photoshop Express has been available on mobile devices since 2010, but Adobe says the new app is more powerful and offers a wider range of recognizable Photoshop features. Both apps share some features, including tools for resizing, masking, adjusting contrast/saturation, and removing objects or blemishes, but Photoshop Express is more reminiscent of typical mobile apps like Picsart and Facetune, while the new Photoshop app offers a user experience closer to the desktop version. The app can sync with the Adobe cloud, allowing you to work on projects across multiple devices.
The free version of Photoshop for mobile gives you access to many editing tools, including the Spot Healing Brush, Tap Select, layers, selections, masks, and image compositing and blending features. It also provides Adobe Stock assets, integrates directly with Creative Cloud apps like Adobe Express, Lightroom, and Fresco, and includes Generative Fill and Generative Expand tools powered by Adobe Firefly AI.
Other advanced Photoshop features like the Magic Wand, Object Select, Content-Aware Fill, Clone Stamp, and Remove Tool are included in the $8 per month or $70 per year subscription. This premium plan is called Photoshop Mobile and Web and includes highlight and shadow adjustment options, advanced blending modes for controlling transparency, color effects, styles, and integration with Photoshop on the web — along with access to Generate Similar and Reference Image on the web platform. All paid Photoshop desktop subscribers will receive premium access to Photoshop on mobile.
Photoshop’s reboot on mobile is a welcome and logical step. Photoshop Express, while useful for quick editing and creating graphics for social media, never really felt like a full-fledged Photoshop. The new Photoshop for iPhone app’s user interface is still largely optimized for mobile, but overall it’s geared more toward creative professionals and time-consuming design tasks.
Adobe hasn’t announced any changes to Photoshop Express, which remains a $5-per-month subscription. It’s unlikely that Adobe plans to support both apps simultaneously, especially given the company’s other mobile editing platform with a similar name, Adobe Express.
With the mobile image editing app market heavily competitive, Photoshop Express downloads are declining. So releasing a nearly full-fledged Photoshop for mobile devices seems like a smart move, especially since there’s a free version. Adobe is also taking other steps to maintain its leadership: in early February, for example, the company acquired the Mac and iOS app Pixelmator.
