Acer Announces Upcoming Laptop Price Increase, But Only in One Country

Acer has announced that it will increase its laptop prices in the US starting in March 2025 due to new tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration. Other manufacturers are also expected to reconsider their pricing policies, as most laptops are assembled in China and are subject to these tariffs.

While many economists have been predicting price increases for most finished goods, some companies have been slow to specify how much they will increase. However, as PCWorld reports, Acer CEO Jason Chen recently gave a more precise figure in an interview with The Telegraph: retail prices for laptops in the US will increase by 10%.

Trump’s tariffs on Chinese goods are in addition to existing tariffs. The price hikes could affect not only Acer products, but also other brands, including Lenovo, Dell, Apple, Asus, and HP, which also assemble equipment in China. Consumers in the U.S. will see higher prices on Acer laptops starting in March of this year.

Recall that the Trump administration has previously warned of additional duties on goods and raw materials from key US trading partners, including Canada, Mexico, and Taiwan, where Acer is headquartered. According to Chen, one possible solution could be to move production facilities outside of China, as ASRock has already done. However, moving assembly to the US is unlikely due to high labor and material costs, which would make production unprofitable.

Adding to the complexity, the Trump administration has also imposed targeted tariffs on important imported materials like steel and aluminum, raising costs not only in the electronics industry but also in the auto industry.

Experts warn that American consumers will have to get used to rising prices for computers and other electronics. As the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) notes, if Trump’s policies continue, the price hikes could continue throughout his four-year presidency.
