1376 cores and 64 TB RAM: Eviden unveils Bullsequana SH superservers with Intel Xeon 6500P/6700P and optional liquid cooling

Eviden, a part of Atos Group, has announced the Bullsequana SH family of servers, built on Intel Xeon 6 Granite Rapids-SP processors. According to the developer, the new machines provide 1.5 times the performance increase and 1.7 times the memory bandwidth increase compared to the previous generation systems.

The series includes the BullSequana SH21, SH41, SH81 and SH161 models in the 2U, 4U, 8U and 19U form factors, respectively. The basis is two-socket 2U nodes, the number of which is one, two, four and eight. Thus, the total number of Xeon 6 processors in the systems varies from 2 to 16. Xeon 6500P and 6700P chips are supported, with up to 86 computing cores. Thus, the number of cores in one system can reach 1376, and threads – 2752.

The SH21, SH41 and SH81 nodes are directly connected to each other via Intel UPI 2.0 (24 GT/s), but the SH161 already uses the UBox UPI switch based on the ASIC, which allows combining 16 sockets into a cache-coherent SMP system (CC-NUMA). There is also a 38U BullSequana SH321 model with 16 nodes and two UBox switches, but the node combination topology for it is not specified.

Each 2U node in the new servers has 32 slots for DDR5 RDIMM or DDR5 RDIMM-3DS RAM modules. The maximum supported RAM capacity varies from 8 to 64 TB. Up to six PCIe 5.0 x8 slots and two PCIe 5.0 x16 connectors or up to five PCIe 5.0 x16 slots are available per node. 1/10/25/100/200/400GbE and FC32/64 adapters are supported. Two M.2 connectors for NVMe SSD with optional RAID 0/1 are available per node. The optional SSD Box module allows connection of eight to 64 hot-swappable E1.S NVMe drives. In addition, an adapter can be added to form RAID 0/1/5/6/00/10/50/60 arrays.

The servers are equipped with 80 PLUS Titanium-certified power supplies with a capacity of 2200 or 3000 W. Each node is equipped with 12 cooling fans. There is an Aspeed AST2600 controller, a 1GbE network management port, two USB 3.1 ports, a serial port and a D-Sub interface. The operating temperature range is from +10 to +35 °C. Compatibility with SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, VMware vSphere (ESXiTM), Windows Server and Oracle Linux platforms is declared.

Bullsequana SH servers are aimed at enterprise customers, cloud service providers and hyperscalers. The modular design provides scalability for HPC and AI workloads. Eviden DLC direct liquid cooling is available as an option, which is claimed to reduce power consumption by at least 10% compared to air cooling, and the inlet water temperature can reach +40 °C. The units are manufactured at Eviden’s Angers, France facility and are backed by a three-year warranty.
