At WWDC 2025, Apple unveiled a new Live Translation feature for Messages, FaceTime, and phone calls. The feature is powered by Apple’s AI models and runs entirely locally on the device, enhancing user privacy.

In the Messages app, Live Translation automatically translates text as you type, enabling two-way communication in the recipient’s language. Replies to messages are instantly translated back.

During FaceTime calls, the feature displays subtitles with real-time translation, and during phone calls, it provides spoken translation throughout the conversation.

Translation and processing of data occurs directly on the device, which ensures that personal conversations remain confidential without sending information to external servers. Apple demonstrated the function in real-time travel planning scenarios, showing how users can coordinate their actions with friends abroad without language barriers.

Live Translation represents Apple’s next step in expanding its AI-powered communication tools as part of the broader Apple Intelligence initiative announced at last year’s WWDC.
