“We knew the odds weren’t in our favor”: Competitive shooter Spectre Divide to shut down six months after release, along with its development studio

American studio Mountaintop, consisting of former developers of CS:GO, Overwatch and Valorant, shared unpleasant news about the future of its competitive shooter Spectre Divide and the entire team.

Mountaintop co-founder and CEO Nate Mitchell said the studio is out of money and will close at the end of this week. Spectre Divide won’t last much longer, with servers shutting down within 30 days.

According to Mitchell, Mountaintop spent more than planned on console versions and marketing for the first season, while Spectre Divide brought in less money than it needed to continue supporting the game and the studio.

Spectre Divide’s audience reached 400,000 people in the first week, but then the numbers started to go down

Mitchell stressed that Mountaintop had tried all options, including finding a publisher, additional funding, and a buyer for the studio, but to no avail: “The industry is in a tough spot right now.”

«”We all knew from the start that the odds were stacked against us, but we signed up for it anyway. Success wasn’t guaranteed. And we did it anyway,” Mitchell said.

The game is distributed on a free-to-play model and offers a mix of Counter-Strike and Valorant elements, crossed with duality mechanics – each player has their own double, to whom they can switch at any time.

Spectre Divide was released on September 3, 2024 on PC (Steam), and on February 25 on PS5, Xbox Series X and S. Those who purchased in-game items after the start of the first season (which began on February 25) will receive refunds. New purchases will be disabled.
