Valve has found a way to combat useless reviews on Steam

User reviews appeared on Steam to give potential buyers an idea of the product, but often instead of useful reviews, players leave jokes, memes and other irrelevant materials. Apparently, Valve has found a way to combat this.

Members of the Reddit forum noticed that in addition to the usual review filters (“Current”, “Funny”, “Useful”, “Recent”), among the items in the “Display” submenu in Steam, the “Use new utility system” function recently appeared.

The filter applies only to relevant and useful reviews. The “helpfulness” system (it is activated by default) allowed the user to hide all humorous and/or provocative reviews of Counter-Strike 2 on Steam, leaving only opinions directly about the game itself for review.

Apparently, the “new utility system” became available ahead of schedule: the “Find out more” button led to a non-existent post on the Valve blog. The feature has now been disabled, likely to be fully released to the public in the foreseeable future.

The usefulness system for user reviews isn’t the only innovation coming to Steam. The clip recording feature is currently undergoing open beta testing – it is available through the Steam overlay in all games and has almost no load on the system. The announcement came at the end of June.
