Rumors about a mobile version of the popular team shooter franchise Overwatch from the American publisher and developer Blizzard Entertainment have been circulating for several years, but for the first time the information was confirmed by an authoritative source.
As noted by the Dexerto portal, confirmation of mobile Overwatch was made in the recently published book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment by Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier.
According to Schreier, production of the mobile version of Overwatch is headed by Walter Kong, who is the general manager of the Overwatch franchise at Blizzard Entertainment.
«Overwatch was led by Walter Kong, who oversaw the release of regular heroes and content for Overwatch 2, as well as new projects like the mobile version of the franchise,” reads a quote from Schreier’s book.
When released in October 2022, Overwatch 2 completely replaced Overwatch. The sequel, which is distributed using a shareware model, was released on PC (Battle.net, Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, S and Nintendo Switch.
A distinctive feature of the second part was supposed to be a large-scale PvE mode, but Blizzard first canceled it, and then curtailed the development of the story missions that replaced it. However, according to Schreier, the game only got better from this.
In August, it was reported that Microsoft had formed a team within Blizzard to develop small (and potentially mobile) games based on Warcraft, StarCraft, Overwatch and other franchises.
