We are talking about DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) technology, which debuted in 2018 with the release of Nvidia GeForce RTX 20 series video cards and has now appeared in more than 540 games and applications.

According to Nvidia, over 80% of RTX graphics card owners enable DLSS while gaming. The Verge called the figure “surprisingly” high, and on the ResetEra forum they joke that the remaining 20% simply don’t know about the function.

Nvidia also boasted that 15 of the top 20 releases of 2024 were DLSS compatible. In addition, with Nvidia’s scaling enabled, users spent more than 3 billion hours playing games.

A year ago, the share of DLSS users among RTX video card owners was 72% (image source: Nvidia)

As part of last week’s CES 2025 exhibition, they presented DLSS 4, Nvidia’s next-generation upscaler, which implements multi-frame generation technology.

The technology allows AI to generate up to three additional frames for each frame drawn in the traditional way. Multi-frame generation will only work on the new GeForce RTX 50 series video cards.

Given the popularity of DLSS, it is not surprising that modern developers, to the displeasure of gamers, create games and create system requirements taking into account such upscaling technologies.
