Legendary dwarf colony simulator Dwarf Fortress has sold over 1 million copies on Steam

Publisher Kitfox Games has shared information about the new successes of the paid version of the legendary dwarf colony simulator Dwarf Fortress, available on Steam, from the developers of the Bay 12 Games team.

Let’s remember that the classic version of Dwarf Fortress was (and remains) available for free on the official Bay 12 Games website for years, and the paid version (with pixel graphics instead of ASCII) appeared on Steam and itch.io in December 2022.

In the first day, sales of Dwarf Fortress on Steam exceeded 160 thousand copies, five days later they reached 300 thousand, by February 2023 they reached 600 thousand, and as of March 2024 they amounted to 800 thousand units.

As it became known, by mid-April 2025, the Steam version of Dwarf Fortress had sold over 1 million copies. The publication about the game’s new achievement in Kitfox Games was accompanied by a thematic illustration (attached above).

Dwarf Fortress has been in development by brothers Zach and Tarn Adams since 2002 and continues to be improved to this day: the game’s adventure mode came out of beta in January.

Players will have to build a dwarven colony and help its inhabitants survive. Dwarf Fortress immerses players in the “deepest and most detailed world simulation ever created.”
