Insiders: New Call of Duty Will Be Released on Old Consoles in 2025, and Fans Are Not Happy

Although more than four years have passed since the beginning of the ninth generation of consoles, some publishers still can’t let go of the eighth-generation consoles. Activision and its Call of Duty series of military shooters seem to be one of them.

CharlieIntel journalists, citing their sources, reported that the new part of Call of Duty, scheduled for release in 2025, is being created for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, among other platforms. This was confirmed by Insider Gaming informants.

«Supporting the last generation in 2025 is a crazy decision, but as far as we know, the game is being developed for older (they will be 13 years old in November – ed.) consoles as well,” CharlieIntel shared.

Call of Duty: Warzone’s new battle royale map Avalon is rumored to be delayed. CharlieIntel speculates that it’s because of older consoles: “Maybe that’s the reason Warzone can’t have two big maps at the same time.”

Activision’s attachment to consoles that are nearly 13 years old is explained by their audience. Despite the devices’ venerable age, many users still haven’t upgraded to the latest consoles.

Even though millions of people are playing last-gen consoles, fans are frustrated and angry at Activision’s fixation on the past. “They’re just greedy,” says user NickFrxstY.

The latest game in the series is Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, which was released on October 25, 2024, simultaneously on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, as well as on Game Pass (for the first time in the franchise’s history).
