Electronic Arts has made a gift to modders and made the source code of the classic Command & Conquer publicly available

While waiting for new remasters, fans of the Command & Conquer strategy series received a gift of a different kind from Electronic Arts – open source code and Steam Workshop support for several games in the franchise at once.

The Electronic Arts GitHub page now contains source code repositories for Command & Conquer: Tiberian Dawn (the first game in the series), Red Alert, Renegade, and Generals (which includes the Zero Hour expansion).

The source code of the listed projects is distributed under the GPL license, which allows enthusiasts to modify games for their own pleasure, without fear of prosecution by Electronic Arts lawyers.

The already mentioned Command & Conquer: Renegade, Generals and Zero Hour, as well as Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars with the Kane’s Wrath add-on and Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight have acquired Steam Workshop support.

For the games listed, Electronic Arts has also updated all mission editors and the World Builder tool (from Generals) to allow users to publish their creations directly to the Steam Workshop.

To mark the release, EA shared archive footage from early versions of Renegade (including the cancelled second installment) and Generals

In addition, EA has released a C&C Modding Support kit (you can find it on GitHub) with modding tools. The kit includes XML, Schema, script, shader, and map source files for all Sage-powered games in the series.

These improvements are the result of the work of a community veteran named Luke Feenan, also known as CCHyper, who previously helped create the C&C: Remastered Collection.
