Naughty Dog co-head Neil Druckmann commented on the future of the gaming franchise in an interview with Variety about the upcoming second season of The Last of Us.

It was previously reported that for a long time Druckmann could not find a clear concept for the continuation of The Last of Us Part II, but in last year’s documentary about the development of the game he announced progress in the search.
«”I don’t have a plot, but I have a concept that I feel is as exciting as the first and second parts. It’s on its own, but it connects all three parts. I feel like there could be another chapter in this story,” Druckmann said at the time.
A little over a year later, Druckmann is not so optimistic. In a conversation with Variety, when asked about a potential The Last of Us Part III, the Naughty Dog co-head had the following to say.
«”I was expecting that question,” Druckmann said with a sigh. “The only thing I can say is: don’t count on a sequel to The Last of Us. That might be it.”
Naughty Dog is currently busy with the PS5 action game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which was announced at The Game Awards 2024, so the studio won’t have time for The Last of Us Part III in the coming years.
At the same time, Druckmann may be lying. When Naughty Dog canceled the multiplayer The Last of Us in December 2023, it let it slip that it was working on “more than one” ambitious single-player game.
