Blizzard has taken on a new shooter in the StarCraft universe – this time with a former Far Cry producer at the helm

Blizzard Entertainment has twice tried to expand the StarCraft sci-fi strategy series with shooters in this universe, but failed both times. Apparently, the company has decided to try again.

According to Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, Blizzard has recently been in the incubation stage (that is, very early) of a new shooter based on StarCraft.

The small team is ostensibly led by former Far Cry executive producer Dan Hay, who moved to Blizzard to lead development of the (later cancelled) survival simulator Project Odyssey.

Schreier mentioned the development of the StarCraft shooter in a new book coming out on October 8th, Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, and also discussed it during IGN’s Unlocked podcast.

«This is a project that, as far as I know, is in production – or at least was at the time the book was written. So, yes, they are working on a StarCraft shooter. StarCraft is not dead at Blizzard,” Schreier assured.

Blizzard’s history with StarCraft shooters leaves much to be desired—both StarCraft: Ghost and Ares were eventually canceled—but, according to Schreier, the company can’t let go of the idea of releasing such a project.

Ares was an analogue of Battlefield in the StarCraft universe and was in development from 2017 to June 2019, and StarCraft: Ghost was a third-person shooter – Blizzard took it up in the early 2000s, and confirmed its cancellation in 2014.
