Overwatch closed in October 2022 with the release of Overwatch 2, but as the sequel developed, it lost its main distinguishing feature from the first part – the large-scale PvE mode was canceled, as were the story missions that replaced it.
Blizzard subsequently temporarily returned the original 6v6 gameplay to Overwatch 2, and with the launch of Season 15, it revived the loot boxes from the first game, which were replaced in the sequel by a battle pass.

Notably, in a February interview, game director Aaron Keller mentioned, “I want players in the future to just call the game Overwatch — a PvP shooter without some of that baggage.”
Overwatch 2 is out now on PC (Battle.net, Steam), PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch. The upcoming Season 16 content launches on April 22 and runs through this summer.
