Nightmare Frontier takes place in an alternate version of the United States in the early 20th century, shortly after an event that caused the line between reality and nightmares to become thinner and living horrors to begin to creep into our dimension.

According to the plot, one of the cities is captured by Dreadweavers – the embodiment of the greatest fears of the locals. Players, in the role of the commander of a gang of scavengers, will recapture the settlement from the monsters.

Users will have to fight their way into the heart of the nightmare, district by district. As they progress, the difficulty and potential rewards will increase, but the loot still needs to be delivered to the base. If the squad dies, all loot is lost.

The core principle of Nightmare Frontier’s combat system is described by its creators as “shoot and slash.” According to Ice Code Games, the studio is preparing “the next evolution” of tactical combat.

Nightmare Frontier is billed as the first Tactical Extraction Looter of its kind. The developers call the game “a mix of XCOM, Hunt: Showdown, and a pinch of Cthulhu.”

Nightmare Frontier is expected to be released this summer on Steam Early Access, with version 1.0 scheduled for Q1 2026. English is the only supported language on Valve’s page so far.
