Nvidia has announced open access to the source code of the RTX Remix toolkit, which allows you to update classic DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 games with the addition of ray tracing and artificial intelligence technologies.

Built on Nvidia’s Omniverse platform, RTX Remix includes a renderer and toolset that allows modders to replace game objects and customize scene lighting. Since the toolkit’s launch earlier this year, more than 20,000 developers have started using it to create mods, resulting in over 100 remasters featured on the RTX Remix Showcase Discord server.
Note that last year Nvidia already open-sourced the RTX Remix Runtime, which gave modders the opportunity to expand game compatibility and improve rendering capabilities. Now, with the opening of the RTX Remix toolkit, it will be possible to replace assets faster, increase supported file formats, and improve tools for working with textures.
In terms of integration with other applications, thanks to the REST API, modders will be able to integrate RTX Remix with other DCC tools such as Blender and generative AI applications such as ComfyUI. This will allow you to create more complex and detailed mods, using the capabilities of mass processing of game objects and fine-tuning details.
To demonstrate the functionality of the REST API, Nvidia has already released plugins for integrating RTX Remix with the ComfyUI generative AI ecosystem, which are also publicly available on GitHub. Generative AI allows you to quickly update high-resolution game textures and create physically accurate materials that work in conjunction with RTX Remix’s full ray tracing.
It must be said that the RTX Remix community is actively involved in the development of new functions and capabilities of the toolkit. Any modder can make suggestions and changes on GitHub, and after the code is reviewed by moderators, these additions can be included in official releases. In turn, Nvidia encourages developers to actively use the open RTX Remix toolkit to create unique modifications and remasters of classic games.
