The French prosecutor’s office began an investigation against the social network X, owned by Ilon Musk. The company is accused of intentional bias of algorithms, which may be distorted by the content of discussions on the platform in order to manipulate public opinion.

The reason for the investigation was the statement of the French legislator sent to the prosecutor’s office on January 12. The document refers to the bias of the algorithms of the social network X, which, presumably, “distort the operation of an automated data processing system.” As it became known to CNBC, experts from the Cybercriminations combat department have already begun the technical analysis of the platform.

A statement to the prosecutor’s office, which also expresses fears that X algorithms can provide an advantage to certain political forces, was sent by deputy Eric Bothorel, representing the President of France Emmanuel Macron.

The company X has not yet given public comments about the investigation. However, CNBC emphasizes that since the purchase of a magician platform in 2022, the social network has repeatedly been criticized for insufficient moderation of content.

In parallel, the European Union has its own investigation against X for possible violations of the “Law on Digital Services” (DSA), according to which social networks are required to fight the spread of malicious content. In December, the European Commission demanded that the company provide internal documents on the work of its algorithms, giving a term until February 15.

X is also accused of manipulating their algorithms to increase the visibility of the posts of ultra -right views. At the same time, Musk publicly supported the Right Party of Germany “Alternative for Germany” (AFD), which ranks second before the elections on February 23, and even unexpectedly attended virtually at one of their events.
