Back in October last year, the head of Tesla recognized that it would be problematic to implement a full-fledged FSD autopilot on electric vehicles released before January 2023 due to outdated equipment. This week he explained that Tesla is ready to change equipment at his own expense to the right customers who paid the full cost of the FSD option.

Recall that the latter at certain periods of Tesla cost customers $ 15,000, and allowed to count on access to the full -fledged FSD autopilot after software update. As it turned out by the end of last year, the HW3 equipment, which was installed on Tesla electric cars since the fall of 2016, allows you to achieve complete autonomy of control purely theoretically, but with such a level of costs that makes such efforts inappropriate. The way out of the situation last fall, Mask saw the replacement of on -board equipment of old electric vehicles with a HW4 set, on which modern software will work more efficiently, and most importantly, more safely.

This week, Tesla representatives were asked about the situation with the implementation of a complete autopilot on HW3 equipment, and if the head of the FSD direction Ashok Elluswamy began to say that the company did not leave a more realistic prospect with its remark: “The truth is that it is that we need to replace HW3 computers with all vehicles with FSD purchased. ” According to Mask, Tesla is ready to change HW3 computers to more advanced ones at the expense of the company, but only from customers who paid for the full -fledged FSD option.

The companies had to change the on -board computers of the HW2.5 on more modern HW3, installed in the period from 2016 to 2018, to open their owners with FSD paid. One of them achieved this right without the need to pay for modernization through the court. The problem is that the equipment of the HW4 generation in the current form is suitable only for installation in new vehicles, it cannot be installed without factory refinement in electric vehicles released before January 2023. Apparently, Tesla will have to create a transitional version of the HW4 on -board computer, which will be compatible with machines that are initially equipped with HW3 generation equipment. It is difficult to judge which of the owners of such electric vehicles has paid for the FSD, but the companies will have to go broke to modernize hundreds of thousands, if not millions of electric vehicles.
