The story of the reluctant cyborg Adam Jensen in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided ended mid-sentence and was never continued, but the developers from the Eidos Montreal studio had ideas on how to finish the trilogy.
Former Eidos Montreal senior screenwriter Mark Cecere, who left the studio in 2018, shared plot developments for the failed sequel Deus Ex: Mankind Divided in an interview with From Script to Life.
In terms of plot, the sequel to Mankind Divided was limited to the first Deus Ex, which takes place after Jensen’s story – in other words, all the important Illuminati from the original game had to survive.
The writers planned that the hero would be able to get to one of the members of the inner circle of the Illuminati, but with his actions he would provoke the events of the original Deus Ex. “That would be Jensen’s tragedy,” Chechere explained.
Against the backdrop of the weak results of Mankind Divided, the series went on pause, but after the sale of Eidos Montreal to the Embracer Group holding, a new Deus Ex was put into development. It was not destined to make it to release – the same Embracer canceled the game.
Chechere said that after leaving, he tried to return to Eidos to finish Jensen’s story, but it didn’t work out. According to the screenwriter, by the time the new part was cancelled, there were almost no developers left in the studio for Human Revolution and Mankind Divided.
