Founded in 2021 by Mass Effect trilogy co-creator and BioWare veteran Casey Hudson, Canadian studio Humanoid Origin (originally Humanoid Studios) will close without releasing a single game.
On its page on the business social network LinkedIn, the official Humanoid Origin account notified that an “unexpected funding shortfall” made it impossible for the studio to continue working.
Humanoid Origin noted that they tried to protect the studio from “problems in the industry,” but failed to cope with the task. Management promises to help employees with future employment.
Humanoid Origin’s debut project was supposed to be a multi-platform AAA game in a new sci-fi universe with an emphasis on storytelling and characters.
Of course, against the backdrop of the closure of the studio, there is no longer talk of releasing an ambitious project: “We are heartbroken that we will not be able to bring our new science fiction universe to the end.”
«The team has made incredible progress in their time together and has shown that it is possible to do amazing work while cultivating a culture of fun and creativity. We thank [the employees] for their talent, courage and friendship,” noted Humanoid Origin.
Humanoid Origin is not the last studio of BioWare veterans. James Ohlen founded Archetype Entertainment (owned by Wizards of the Coast), and Mac Walters founded Worlds Untold (part of NetEase Games).
