Scientists from South Korea have created a new miracle material that absorbs 99% frequencies in the ranges of 5G, 6G and Wi-Fi networks. Tin foil hats are becoming a thing of the past. Seriously, the new product will improve the operation of communication equipment sensitive to interference – from smartphones to radars of car autopilots. The invention is protected by international patents and licensed for mass production.

Today the air is saturated with electromagnetic waves in many ranges. Therefore, shielding in radio electronics is the norm. Another thing is that ordinary metal screens reflect the radio signal, which does not improve the state of the air, and special absorbing screening usually works in a narrow frequency range. Scientists at the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) have created a shielding material that they say is “the world’s first ultra-thin film composite material capable of absorbing more than 99% of electromagnetic waves.”

It is to absorb, not to reflect. About 1% of the energy incident on the material is spent on reflection. At the same time, the material is light, flexible and durable, which will be especially in demand by manufacturers of folding smartphones. With all other advantages, the thickness of the material is less than 0.5 mm.

«The team synthesized a magnetic material by altering the crystal structure of ferrite, allowing it to selectively absorb desired frequencies,” the press release notes. Ferrite is applied to a thin polymer film with a pre-created conductive pattern. Finally, a film of carbon nanotubes was added to the material.

«This electromagnetic wave absorption and shielding material is less than 0.5 mm thick and features low reflectance of less than 1% and high absorption of more than 99% in three different frequency ranges,” the press release notes.

The height of perfection would be to use the absorbed energy to generate electricity, but this is not yet possible. However, the ability of the material to almost completely shield devices from the effects of EMR in the 5G, 6G and Wi-Fi bands with complete absorption is already an achievement that is difficult to overestimate. We just have to wait for implementation.
