Google claims to be a leader in artificial intelligence technology, and its Gemini AI model outperforms its competitors. However, in terms of the number of users, ChatGPT came out ahead. Currently, Gemini’s active audience size is undisclosed, while ChatGPT has 300 million weekly users.

Despite being one of the pioneers in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), the company was caught off guard by the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. Since then, Google has been actively working in this direction, introducing new features and striving to take a leading position. Recently, Gemini’s technology even beat OpenAI in the Chatbot AI rankings. However, the Gemini application still lags behind ChatGPT in terms of downloads – 106 million versus 465 million, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing App Store statistics.

It is noted that although Gemini does not yet generate significant revenue, offering a premium version of the chatbot by subscription for $20 per month, it is a key element of Google’s AI strategy, influencing core business areas such as search and advertising. Also, despite the fact that the paid version adds various bonuses and 2 TB of cloud storage, not all users choose a subscription for the sake of the AI ​​itself. For example, Philadelphia data scientist Sifei Han noted that Gemini appreciates the additional storage capabilities, but prefers the ChatGPT style.

According to US analytics company Earnest Analytics, about 60% of paying Gemini users retain their subscription six months after signing up. This score is better than some of its competitors, such as Character.AI and Perplexity, but still trails OpenAI and Anthropic.

It is worth saying that Gemini technology is already used in various Google products, including “AI overviews” in search results, in the business versions of Gmail and Google Drive. The company is also actively promoting Gemini as the default assistant on mobile devices, including its Pixel phones and Motorola and OnePlus devices.
