DJI has unveiled the compact Flip drone with a foldable body and a price tag of $439, making it an interesting option for those who have never owned a drone. With the touch of a button, it can be launched directly from the palm of your hand, placed back on your hand, or controlled using a controller. A camera is installed on board the unmanned aerial vehicle, which provides photo and video recording of higher quality than that of its competitors.

DJI Flip occupies a position in the Chinese manufacturer’s assortment above the DJI Neo model, which costs $199. It offers traditional drone photography, but features a higher-quality camera, an improved stabilizer, longer battery life (up to 31 minutes) and quick launch capabilities. The device automatically turns on when the case is unfolded, saving the owner two button presses. The propellers are protected by a design reminiscent of bicycle spokes, and a built-in IR sensor protects the camera from frontal impacts.
The drone’s camera features a 1/1.3-inch sensor and f/1.7 aperture. It supports video recording in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second and a 4:3 aspect ratio. Vertical videos in 2.7K resolution and shooting 48-megapixel photos are also available. DJI Flip is equipped with a three-axis stabilizer that ensures smooth video shooting, and also supports a professional 10-bit D-Log M profile. The drone weighs 249 g, but even when folded it does not fit into a trouser pocket, notes The Verge. In addition, the device makes noticeable noise during operation.
The price of $439 is valid for the DJI Flip kit with the entry-level RC-N3 controller, in which the smartphone serves as the screen. For $779, the drone comes with three batteries, a carrying case and a more functional DJI RC 2 controller with a built-in 700 cd/m² brightness screen. DJI Flip is already on sale.
