At CES 2025 in Las Vegas, HMD Global introduced the compact HMD OffGrid device, which allows smartphones to connect to satellite communications. The new product is aimed at Android and iOS owners whose devices do not support this function at the hardware level.
While satellite connectivity is becoming standard on modern smartphones like the Apple iPhone and Google Pixel 9, not all devices have connectivity. As PCMag reports, HMD OffGrid solves this problem by giving users access to messaging and emergency services via satellites, even in places where cellular networks are not available.
The device is housed in a durable housing with IP68 protection, which guarantees resistance to moisture and dust. In addition, the HMD OffGrid meets the military standard MIL-STD-810H, so it can withstand extreme weather conditions, drops and submersion in water. The device is lightweight and compact, weighing only 60 grams with dimensions of 9.4 x 6 x 1.2 cm, and a 600 mAh battery, according to HMD, provides up to three days of operation without recharging.
To interact with the device, the HMD OffGrid application is used. It supports two-way messaging, real-time location tracking for up to five contacts, and the ability to send pre-written messages with one tap. Messages can be sent to any phone number, even if the recipient does not have the OffGrid application installed. However, in order to reply to the message, the recipient will need to download the app.
In addition, the OffGrid HMD integrates SOS functionality provided by rescue coordination service FocusPoint International and its Overwatch x Rescue service. The service operates around the clock and offers assistance in different languages.
The gadget will be available for $200 in Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the USA. As for pricing plans, OffGrid app users on the HMD Unlimited plan will get unlimited messaging and location tracking for $15 per month (for an additional $5 per month). The $80/year HMD Freedom plan includes 350 text messages and location tracking for $0.10 per request.
