Google has launched a “neutral” Chromium development project

Google, together with the Linux Foundation, has launched an initiative aimed at “funding open development and improving projects” in the Chromium ecosystem. The fund is called Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers and is positioned as a “neutral” space for supporting Chromium projects.

The original Chromium project began in 2008 with the release of the Google Chrome browser. Open source is the basis for many other browsers, including Microsoft Edge, Opera and Brave. In addition to Google, several well-known companies are already participating in the new initiative, including Meta✴, Microsoft and Opera. Microsoft said that with its participation, the corporation seeks to “ensure clear and open management of funds transferred to the needs of the community.” Google noted that over the past year alone, the company has made more than 100,000 changes to the Chromium project.

In November, the US Department of Justice, in an effort to eliminate Google’s monopoly in the search engine market, demanded that the company abandon the Chrome project. The new Supporters of Chromium-Based Browsers initiative will help support the open source project even without company participation.
