A mock-up of the Nintendo Switch 2 console was shown at CES 2025

Nintendo is not officially present at CES 2025. However, accessory maker Genki brought to the event a 3D-printed mockup of what it says is the successor to the Nintendo Switch handheld gaming console. If this mockup truly represents Nintendo’s upcoming console, it will have a number of significant differences from the current-gen model.

Judging by the mockup of what is believed to be the Switch 2, Nintendo’s next console will be wider than the original model, with slightly larger Joy-Con controllers that may be more comfortable to hold. Compared to the Steam Deck, the Switch 2’s layout looks significantly smaller, partly because the Joy-Con controllers aren’t as pronounced or ergonomic. However, the layout looks closer in size to the Steam Deck than the original Switch.

Genki co-founder and CEO Eddie Tsai said that the Joy-Con controllers will be attached to the console itself using magnets. To disconnect them you need to press the button at the top of the back of each controller. This button probably pushes out a pin that presses against the console body and disengages the magnets.

Tsai added that if necessary, you can detach the Joy-Con by simply pulling the controller firmly to the side. It was not said how he knew these details. It was also noted that the Joy-con controllers have a built-in optical sensor, so they can be used as a kind of analogue of a mouse.

Previously, Nintendo promised to officially introduce the successor to the Switch console by April 2025. It is still unknown when exactly the presentation of the new console, which will probably be called Switch 2, will take place.
