Asus has introduced the first external graphics card with a Thunderbolt 5 interface – a device called ROG XG Mobile 2025. The manufacturer will offer GeForce RTX 50 series accelerators in this version up to the flagship GeForce RTX 5090 model.

One of the key features of the new ROG XG Mobile 2025 external graphics unit, which distinguishes it from the previous generation model with GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards up to the RTX 4090, is the new connector. The new version of ROG XG Mobile 2025 is equipped with Thunderbolt 5 interface, which does not suffer from insufficient bandwidth issues, unlike previous generations of Thunderbolt.
Many external graphics cards use the OCuLink connector for connection, providing 64 Gbps throughput. Despite the not very significant increase compared to the Thunderbolt 3 and 4 interfaces (up to 40 Gbps), the difference in the final performance of external video cards was quite noticeable. The new Thunderbolt 5 interface provides data transfer at 80 Gbps, which should have an even more positive effect on the speed of external graphics.
The 1kg Asus ROG XG Mobile 2025 will be offered with GeForce RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5090 mobile cards. The latter is equipped with 10,492 CUDA cores and 24GB of GDDR7 memory. The manufacturer has updated the cooling system of the new version of ROG XG Mobile, adding an evaporation chamber and a dust filter. The area of heat dissipation from hot components has increased by 54%. The manufacturer also claims that the new product is 3 dBA quieter than its predecessor with the RTX 4090.
The ROG XG Mobile external module is equipped with a built-in power supply with a power of up to 350 W. Although the mobile version of the RTX 5090 has a maximum TGP of 150 W, additional power is required for various connectors. The set includes a 5-Gbit LAN connector, a USB Type-A port, an SD memory card reader, HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.1. You can also charge your laptop through ROG XG Mobile 2025.
The ROG XG Mobile 2025 with RTX 5070 Ti will cost $1999. The price for the version with RTX 5090 has not been announced, but it will definitely be significantly higher. The new product should go on sale before the end of the first quarter of 2025.
