Swedish programmer and game designer Markus Persson, known as the creator of Minecraft, announced his readiness to take on the spiritual successor to his block sandbox.
Let’s remember that in 2024, Persson founded the Bitshift Entertainment studio, with which he makes an old-fashioned roguelike and first-person dungeon crawler Levers and Chests (code name) with “absurdly broken mechanics” and voxel graphics.
With the onset of 2025, Persson launched a poll on his personal microblog in which he invited people to vote on which project he should throw all his energy into – the aforementioned roguelike or Minecraft 2. The second option wins (81.5% to 19.5%).
In subsequent tweets, Persson confirmed that he had “essentially announced Minecraft 2” and assured that he was 100% serious about the results of the said survey (there are still two days left until it ends).
Persson emphasized that he is not trying to cast a shadow on the works of Mojang and even expressed his readiness to cooperate with Microsoft to create an official Minecraft 2 if the platform holder “for some reason” wants to attract a developer.
According to Persson, he aims to make a game very similar to Minecraft. The developer is planning an early access phase, a near-zero share of the plot, and hopes to add the Creeper to the project (at least as an Easter egg).
Persson doesn’t care which of the two games (roguelike or Minecraft successor) comes out first. There is a risk that none of the projects will see the light of day, but the developer assured: “I enjoy working on games again.”
