Solidigm was formed in 2021 as a result of the first phase of SK hynix’s acquisition of Intel’s solid-state memory business in China. Towards the end of last year, Solidigm decided to wind down the supply of two models of its consumer-class SSDs and focus on server solutions.
It is noteworthy that the second phase of the deal between SK hynix and Intel will formally be completed only in March of this year, when the latter will completely transfer all assets to the buyer and transfer all employees involved in this business to its staff. SK hynix has integrated former Intel assets into its structure as a subsidiary of Solidigm. Representatives of the latter confirmed to Tom’s Hardware that the discontinued P41 Plus and P44 Pro drives will be the brand’s last SSDs for the consumer segment. From now on, you will only need to look for products of this type in the SK hynix product range. Solidigm itself will now focus on the server segment, where it has managed to become a leader in the production of high-capacity drives that are used in the infrastructure of artificial intelligence systems. Let us remind you that Solidigm recently released a 122 TB solid-state drive.
Solidigm decided to give up its ambitions to develop the consumer market back in October 2023, since it had already reduced a significant number of employees employed in this area of activity. By the way, this will not prevent the company from supplying the “old-timers” Intel 660p and 670p until October of this year. The year before last was generally not a good year for manufacturers of consumer-grade SSDs, as prices dropped significantly. Perhaps Solidigm then realized that there was no point in spending resources on a market segment with very modest financial returns.
