Apple has allegedly stopped production of the Vision Pro AR headset

The first-generation Apple Vision Pro augmented reality headset is likely to be discontinued amid reports of declining demand and production cuts at the beginning of the year, writes MacRumors.

In October, The Information reported that Apple had sharply reduced production of the Vision Pro and may be planning to discontinue it by the end of 2024. According to insiders, the company began reducing its production in early summer, which indicates that there is enough Vision Pro in stock to meet demand until the end of 2025. Similarly, Apple does this with products with low demand, as, for example, it did with the iPhone 12 mini smartphone.

According to The Information, Apple suppliers have produced enough components to assemble between 500,000 and 600,000 Vision Pro headsets. Several of them suspended production of Vision Pro components back in May due to weak sales forecasts, and warehouses are now filled with tens of thousands of unshipped parts.

It is quite possible that they will find use in the next version of the Vision Pro 2 headset, just like the equipment on which the first generation headset was manufactured. Vision Pro 2 is expected to be released in the spring of 2026.

Apple has allegedly paused work on the second-generation Vision Pro for at least a year to focus on developing a more affordable headset. According to rumors, Apple has set suppliers the task of preparing to produce four million copies of the budget headset over its entire life cycle. This is half the amount that was told to suppliers regarding the release of components for the Vision Pro, meaning Apple’s expectations for sales of a cheaper headset are even lower.

According to The Information, there are some indications that Apple may release “an incremental update to the product with limited changes to its physical design,” such as a new chip. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, a second generation Vision Pro powered by the M5 chip and Apple Intelligence is in development. Gurman predicts that the device could be released between fall 2025 and spring 2026.
