Enthusiasts from the Tripmine Studios team have released a new trailer for Operation: Black Mesa, an unofficial remake of the Opposing Force and Blue Shift addons to the original Half-Life on the Source engine.
It’s worth noting that Operation: Black Mesa is not related to Crowbar Collective’s Black Mesa, the Source remake of Half-Life. Development of Operation: Black Mesa began back in September 2007.
The current iteration of Operation: Black Mesa was born in 2012 from the merger of two fan projects – Operation: Black Mesa (a remake of Opposing Force) and Guard Duty (a remake of Blue Shift) – after their development teams merged at Tripmine Studios.
Tripmine hasn’t often pleased fans with new Operation: Black Mesa materials lately, but on the eve of 2025, it published several fresh screenshots (see above) and a three-minute gameplay trailer for the remake (see below).
The developers promise two single-player campaigns with expanded gameplay and new content (including story content), many engine improvements, more than 30 types of enemies and 18 types of weapons.
Opposing Force and Blue Shift were developed by Gearbox Software. Both addons cover the events of Half-Life from the point of view of another character – HECU soldier Adrian Shepard and Black Mesa guard Barney Calhoun.
Operation: Black Mesa will follow Black Mesa with a commercial release, although its price has not yet been determined. The remake does not have a release date at this stage, but there is a page on the Steam service.
