A leak last year revealed that Insomniac Games was developing a multiplayer game in the Marvel’s Spider-Man series. The project, called The Great Web, was eventually cancelled, but a group of modders are committed to preserving its legacy.
Let us remind you that at the release of the PC version, traces of network play were found in the code of Marvel’s Spider-Man, including the corresponding category of characters and scripts for two-person co-op, but modders will go even further.
The team’s intentions are demonstrated by the recently presented trailer for the Spider-Man Multiplayer mod. The video was posted on the YouTube channel tiffsomniac and includes joint exploration of New York and beating up thugs.
The video features a cooperative for three people, but the modders claim that they will support up to 16 players. For now, the team is focused on the open world, and will later take on story missions.
They promise support for other modifications (to display they must be installed on all participants in the session), compatibility with versions for Steam and EGS, as well as a port for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 when it gets to PC.
Spider-Man Multiplayer does not have a release date yet, but work has been underway since August 2024. YouTuber Caboose, who reviewed the prototype of the project, warns: “This [modification] will blow your mind.”
