Windows 11 has a bug that prevents it from installing a security update

Microsoft has warned users about an issue in Windows 11 that may prevent security updates from installing on some devices. The issue affects those who used manually created Windows 11 installation media, specifically USB drives and CDs, using patches released in October and November.

According to The Verge, Microsoft has officially acknowledged the bug by publishing information on its website. According to the statement, “When you use installation media for Windows 11, version 24H2, the device may enter a condition where it can no longer download Windows security updates. However, this only occurs if the media was created using security updates released between October 8, 2024 and November 12.”

It is noted that the problem does not affect devices that received the October and November patches directly through Windows Update or the Microsoft Update catalog website.

To resolve the issue, Microsoft recommends rebuilding your Windows 11 installation media with the December security update, released on December 10, 2024, and reinstalling the operating system. And to avoid this in the future, it is recommended that “the media used to install Windows 11, version 24H2, include the security update no earlier than December 2024.”

It’s worth noting that Windows 11 24H2 is not limited to this problem. As reported by Bleeping Computer, other bugs were also found in the new version of the operating system, including problems with audio devices, launching Outlook when using an outdated version of Google Workspace Sync, as well as other problems. Additionally, 24H2 has previously been reported to have a compatibility issue with some Ubisoft games that are currently receiving patches. Microsoft said it is constantly working to fix the bugs.
