Tesla’s main competitor has launched the development of humanoid robots

China’s BYD, one of the world’s largest electric vehicle makers, has set up a special laboratory at its 15th business unit to develop artificial intelligence products, including humanoid robots. This division was created in 2003 and until 2019 was called FinDreams Technology. Its main activity is the development and production of automotive components, including batteries, engines and electronic systems.

In the first half of this year, the 15th business unit underwent an organizational restructuring. The Research Institute of Technology, which is under his command, allocated part of its staff to create an artificial intelligence laboratory. Currently, BYD is actively attracting specialists to create humanoid robots, offering salaries above the market level.

The new laboratory is tasked with developing industrial robots, primarily AGVs (automated guided vehicles). Other types of robots are still at the preliminary research stage.

In mid-December, BYD posted job openings on the WeChat platform for master’s and doctoral graduates from universities around the world. The job descriptions include, among other things, competencies in the development of humanoid and four-legged robots.

Previously, BYD has already begun experiments with humanoid robots at its car assembly plants. On November 5, humanoid robot manufacturer UBTech Robotics announced the use of its robots in BYD factories.

Other automakers are also actively experimenting with humanoid robots. UBTech robots work on an assembly line at one of Nio’s factories. Xpeng introduced Iron, a humanoid robot measuring 178 cm tall and weighing 70 kg, which is currently operating in Xpeng factories and will be available for purchase to companies and individuals in the future. Li Auto founder, chairman and CEO Li Xiang also doesn’t see his company’s future without humanoid robotics.
