The end of 2024 is getting closer, and the team at SteamDB, the service’s unofficial database, decided to look back at the passing 12 months for the Steam digital store, following Valve itself.
Valve, in a recent article, provided information about the most popular and successful games on Steam for 2024, while SteamDB focused on statistics on new releases.
Let us remind you that 2024 was ahead of 2023 in terms of the number of games released on Steam (14,567 to 14,393) back in the fall, and by the end of December it was ahead of the curve – as of the 25th, the figure reached 18,825.
Thus, in 2024, 30% more games were released on Steam than in 2023. A significant part of them were single-player (14.3 thousand), had the tag “Casual game” (8.7 thousand), “Indie” (8.6 thousand) and/or “Action” (7.3 thousand) .
It is worth noting that the lion’s share of more than 18.8 thousand new games on Steam in 2024 are not outstanding releases, but frankly low-quality and/or extremely niche products.
SteamDB reports that more than 14.8 thousand releases did not reach the required number of users and sales to gain access to profile customization features. Such projects are not taken into account in the calculation of game collections and trophies.
In addition to the number of releases, the Steam audience continues to grow. In early December, the service’s peak online number exceeded 39 million concurrent users for the first time in history.
