From January 1, 2025, smartphones running Android KitKat and earlier versions of the Android platform will no longer support the WhatsApp instant messaging service. Meta✴, which owns WhatsApp, is reportedly ending support for these older devices because the app’s evolving features, including AI features, require more modern hardware.

The list of popular smartphone models that are affected by the upcoming end of messenger support includes:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini;
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014;
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601;
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90;
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V.
Those using these smartphones are advised to back up their WhatsApp data on a new device as after January 1, 2025, media files and chat history will be deleted from the messenger.
«Every year we identify the most outdated devices and software with the fewest users. These devices, among other things, may not have the latest security updates or features necessary for WhatsApp to work,” warns the messenger development team.
Previously, Meta✴ announced the end of support for WhatsApp from May 5, 2025 on iPhone smartphones with operating system versions prior to iOS 15.1.
