The British holding Arm has announced its intention to seek a retrial of the lawsuit against Qualcomm, which was accused of misuse of licensed technologies after the deal to purchase Nuvia in 2021. The court decision in this case was made in favor of the American company, which means that it will continue to produce Snapdragon X processors.
A jury in the District Court of Delaware sided with Qualcomm on two of the three counts in the lawsuit. The American company may continue to produce chips from the Snapdragon X family and develop new microprocessors, but a final assessment of the actions of Nuvia, whose license was revoked by Arm in 2021, has not been given.
«We are disappointed that the jury was unable to reach a consensus on all counts. We intend to seek a retrial due to the jury’s impasse,” Arm said in a statement.
«From the very beginning, our top priority has been protecting Arm’s intellectual property and the unparalleled ecosystem we have built with our valued partners over more than 30 years. As always, we are committed to driving innovation in our rapidly evolving marketplace and helping partners advance the future of computing,” an Arm spokesperson said.
Let us recall that during the consideration of Arm’s lawsuit against Qualcomm, the jury concluded that the American company did not violate the license agreement for the use of Arm-owned architecture, which allowed the development of processor cores from Nuvia, which came under the control of Qualcomm in 2021. The jury also decided that the current licensing agreement between Arm and Qualcomm covers the continued development of processor cores based on technology obtained through the Nuvia acquisition. However, they could not reach a consensus regarding Nuvia’s possible violation of the license agreement with Arm, which was in force at the time of the deal with Qualcomm.
